I think the comments were fair given 20/20 hindsight and looking at the bikes we have now,i wonder if dave rode one back then because to offer an opinion based on hearsay is different to personal experience.On a funny note motorcycle tyres back then were so hard they often outlasted the bikes they came fitted to,harleys included.Do you think dave and i should have a private conversation about...say...huge tariffs to protect harley when the japanese made reliable cruisers and harley was going bust?? 
ps dave looking forward to seeing the twin with two saito 30's flying it,just one sounds good on the bench so two will be a real bonus.

Motorcycles like cars and gotten a lot more technological advance than the 70s. In the 70s you could still work on your own car fairly easily with basic tools and a timing light. Now you need all sorts of computers and hitech gear, modern motorcycles aren't as bad as car but a whole lot more complicated than their older brothers!

Pete- I think the old man was just taking the bike out by himself and learning how to not kill himself. I remember a story where he popped the front wheel up the first time he rode one and that probably taught him a lesson. He learned the bike and was worse than ever with it.
Dave, you can say what you will but anyone who knew the Mach III will know you're whistling in the wind. Good brakes, bad brakes, or no brakes it still became a legend. That began the Kawasaki era of dominance. That little bit of 'government help' that President Reagan gave AMF was the only thing he ever did that made me mad. Personally, I think it destroyed the motorcycle market for decades.

I have subscribed to Cycle World since it's first issue in 1962, the bikes being popular didn't change or improve. their suspension and brakes. The same was true of the RD 350.
Pete, I did post that picture a while back,,it was in the thinking stage then, I actually ordered it yesterday, I have had the plans for several months. I have had a Saito .30 since they first came and bought one from w8ye recently.
PS, those tarriffs are nothing compared to one's to keep Harley's out of Japan.

I had the RD350's little brother the RD200 fun little bike responsive thanks to the 2 cycle engine but if you didn't keep the RPM you couldn't get a sparkplug to last out a week in the left cylinder. I took in under warranty but either they didn't care or the mechanic couldn't/wouldn't figure it out. He came up with an idea AFTER the warranty expired but I wouldn't let him touch.

Sheeting foam wing cores is easy as long as you have the blocks of foam they were cut out of. Essentially, you make up your sheets, squeegee your selected adhesive onto both sheets and cores, mate the parts, stack them into the blocks they were cut out of, put weights on the stack and go get a beer. In the morning you remove the weights, unstack the blocks/cores and see how you made out.

Dave i'm laughing so hard tears are falling,no offence at what follows.I suggest you re read an early american 'cycle' magazine road test on the rd350 they were raving about it...awesome brakes and handling,a real giant killer they say.Dare i suggest that you take an extreme,if not ignorant,view of made in america motorcycles?
Charlie is spot on with the foam core wing sheeting i've done it many times but with a twist.I sit back and watch the glue dry over too many beers.Are you going to cover it or paint it?

Not ignorant Pete, the first thing I did with my 1200 Sporty was replace the Fork Springs with Progressive springs and the rear shocks with Progressive's 440 13.5" shocks. The rear shocks have 3.14" of travel vs about 1" which would not even move. Cycle World said the Sportster's had the best 5 dollar shocks money could buy, in my opinion they weren't even that good. I'm a patriot not an idiot.
I have the appropriate Fork Spring Cap and all.
It's getting these next, installing them is a no brainer. Please lighten up on the derogatory names, you might make me cry

The only thing i did with my ZX 11 was to put a header on and gained the ability for a second gear throttle wheel and improved the top and to180 mph. All that with a 280 pound crazy fool on board. I just can’t Emagine what that would have been like with a 150 crazy fool on board.

I am trying to help a guy find HS needles for a Saito 1.30 twin, this listing is for the Saito .80 single. How inter changeable are they? Anybody who knows that gets to be King Saito for a day.
