More speed for .15 Little Toni
Hello all, I have a .15 size Prather Little Toni QM that I flew about 20 yrs ago with an OS 32F and stock muffler. I have recently stripped the paint off the fuse and am going to try to do a better paint job this time and get her in the air again.
It scooted along nicely with the 32 but I'm curious about going faster with maybe a Jett 30? Would it be a substantial difference or would a much cheaper option of putting a Jett muffler on the OS 32 bring me close to the performance of the Jett 30? I also looked at the Jett 35 but I think the added weight might present issues with having to add weight. This plane was designed for a .15

To me, if I was investing in a smaller Jett I'd have to go with the .35 and deal with the extra weight, as it is known as a monster. The new engine is worth more than most airframes so my priority would be to buy the most engine in the package size. If I was building a new QM15 for sport it'd be the .35 hands down.
However, I think your idea of fitting a tuned muffler to the OS is an economical and sensible way of boosting the top end performance, though matching the Jett might be a challenge.
What prop did you run on the.32?

Ok, good info. I looked and I could literally move the batt to the front edge of the stab. With the OS .32 it seems like the batt pack was near the back of the wing saddle area so I'm thinking a 35 might not require extra weight.
I think I was using an 8x7 and 8x8 prop on the .32 it appeared to be faster than a DC Doddger I have with a YS 45re and a marine pipe. Hard to say though, the Toni is a lot smaller than a Q500 plane and I know that deceiving.
Im going to look at the dimension of the Jett 35 and see how much of the front of the plane I will have to emilinate

Those are typically pretty fast props on .32's. You were probably not far behind the Doddger if a hot .15 can produce 120-125.
Funny, I have a DS Doddger with a bluehead ST-X.45 FIRE and marine pipe. It's dormant waiting for a thinned wing. And I have another Doddger in the box.

Hi Jeff, not to hijack but the .15 QM + Jett .35 combo comes up now and again on this forum and also in my "new fun projects" imagination wish list. What would you expect on top end with this setup - 160-170? I think you've done some speedin' with the Jett .35.

21,000 with an 8x7! Lil Toni going to need some new servos too
What brand of prop would you recommend for those RPM? I lost a blade on the Toni with and OS.32 and I thought someone shot my airplane. Spinner came off, muffler bolts sheared, never did find the muffler.

APC is the only prop to run. If running anything else you're taking a chance.... I am not sure on the little toni I would think 150+ could be attained depends on how clean the plane is. Here is video of my Jett 35, it is a little old as it was back in 2008 or so. At the time I didn't know I was being filmed and I don't know how to edit videos so skip to the 1:00 minute mark to see the flight. This was on a APC 8x7 at around 21,500 on the ground. Maybe 23,500-to 24,000 in the air.

That is impressive speed in the video for a sport setup. You are close to the rpm limit on that line of APC sport props. They suggest 190,000/diameter. But they also make a line of racing props, including ones with carbon fiber for more strength.
As I said earlier, .15 sized quarter midget airframes do not need 8 in diameter props to hookup. Hell, the much larger and heavier Formula One models only used an 8 1/4" diameter prop. I believe APC makes a sport 7x7, 7x8, and 7x9 prop, and the the Q40 Carbon props are 7.4" diameter with fairly high pitches. At any rate, a 7 inch prop would increase your APC safety margin by 14%.

If I remember correctly the APC 8x7 is very close to the same load as a 7.4x7.5 Q40 prop. The LS nelsons spin the 7.4x7.5 around 25,000 on the ground and the Jett 35 LX with high timing is around 22,000 so you can see this little engine makes some power. Not knocking Jett but he has two awesome engines in his line up the 35 LX and the 56 LX. My 60LX which was the version before the 56 turns a APC 9x8 at 19,000 on the ground with 15% fuel.

Make a turbo plug head for the magnum .15, and it will pick up a lot. I picked up a couple of .32s after reading this. An F and 2 SXs. They need some parts but were pretty much a gift. $20 for a couple and one was $5. I noticed the liner was peeling on an SX, and the rear bearing was really destroyed on the other. All Heli motors. Hope they are the right ones.
